The picturesque small town boasts the Mill Creek running through downtown alongside the Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center, and this creek is a host site for the NC Wildlife Commission’s Mountain Heritage Trout Waters program. Newberry Creek and a section of the Upper Catawba River have also designated trout streams.
There are seven hiking, waterfall and biking trails within minutes of downtown.
Explore over 14,000 protected acres inside the Curtis Creek Recreation Area. Curtis Creek is another designated, delayed harvest trout stream. Rushing, cold mountain water flows over ancient boulders, creating ideal trout conditions.
